4 Fabulous Earth Day Activities for the Family

Spring is the season of growth and sustainability. And Earth Day is a day to teach our children about the importance of recycling, conserving water, and how to "go green." After all, our children are the future, so why show them how to take care of this beautiful world we live in? To help, here are some great family-friendly Earth Day activities.

Earth Day is a great time to teach your kids (and remind yourself) about the importance of recycling, conserving water, and how to "go green." Earth Day occurs every spring and acts as a reminder to check how we are treating our surroundings.

There are plenty of Earth Day activities, some are great family activities and others are reminders to treat our homes with respect for the future.

Family Fun Earth Day Activities

Many Earth Day activities teach us (and our kids) about making a difference for the environment. There are conventional Earth Day activities like planting trees or cleaning up the local park, but also other ways to make a difference and have some family fun!

1. Make an Effort to Learn from Others

There are so many ways to inspire others and learn from others. In fact, many children's books discuss conservation, such as how to care for animals, the impact of nature and why recycling matters.

For example, Flight of the Honey Bee by Raymond Huber teaches your kids about honey bees, so after reading the book, take your children on a scavenger hunt to raise their awareness of how important these creatures are to our planet.

Make Earth Day the day that you and your children read one of those books (or a few!) and do an activity that will help connect the book and its content to real life.

2. Make Some Wrapping Paper

It may seem a little odd in the middle of spring, but there are plenty of birthday parties this season. Wrapping paper is extremely wasteful (and expensive). Why spend all that time picking out the paper and spending money it, after you've already bought a gift?

So, wrap gifts in homemade and recycled wrapping paper.

How?

There are many different ways to make wrapping paper as a family activity. For example, anything can be turned into wrapping paper.

  • Start with a brown paper bag or an old newspaper or old clothing.
  • Next decorate the wrapping paper by decorating it with the kids!

Your kids will love adding their own flair to the wrapping, and the environment will love your resourcefulness!

3. Make a Bird Feeder

Making a bird feeder is a great way to spend some quality time with your kids and to teach them how to reuse items in the home that may not get used much anymore. It can be as easy as a toilet paper roll covered in peanut butter and bird seed to something as complex as carving a small log into a feeder.

Whatever you choose to do your kids will enjoy the lasting benefits of watching the birds come flocking to their feeders!

Home-Related Earth Day Activities

Reduce, reuse and recycle is a motto that every homeowner can adopt this Earth Day. After all, there are plenty of ways to help make your home turn green. In addition to saving water and energy, these Earth Day activities are a reminder to help save money throughout the year!

4. Home Energy Conservation

It's never too early to start learning about how to conserve energy in the home and learning how to be more energy efficient. For example, teach your kids the importance of saving power in the home.

Teaching them to turn off the lights when they don't need them, or unplugging appliances when they're finished with them, or closing the fridge after they've raided it will help considerably with saving energy.

The absolute best way to teach a child anything is to lead by example. If you want your child to learn how to conserve energy, then you need to be doing it as well. If you tell your kids not to wastewater, and then you take an hour-long shower, you aren't really setting a good example.
